What Oracle Database @ Azure Means for You Today

If you haven’t already heard, Oracle and Microsoft recently announced a major update to their partnership in the form of a joint offering called Oracle Database @ Azure.

You can click here to watch the full announcement with Larry Ellison and Satya Nadella. Or read the press releases from Oracle and Microsoft.

Or, to save you some time, here’s an overview:

What they’ve done is take Oracle hardware and software and physically move it into the Azure data center. So when a customer uses Microsoft Azure they’ll now have the option to run their applications on Oracle’s tech. This announcement is a clear message from both Oracle and Microsoft that Oracle workloads run best on Oracle. However, I think this is a strong indication of their dedication to collaboration in the years to come. Overall, the goal is to make moving to the cloud simpler and easier for all clients. But what does this mean for you today?

Well, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is, that this solution has only just been announced and is starting with only a couple of regions. As such, it probably won’t be available in Canadian cloud regions for at least 12 months. The good news is, that you may not need to wait.

While Oracle Database @ Azure is still a year away, what is available to us is the OCI Azure Interconnect. Announced a little over a year ago, this first-of-its-kind cloud experience will give users a low latency high throughput connection between OCI and Azure and is touted as a best of both worlds solution for customers. This is especially beneficial for joint customers who can migrate their workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) without the need for complex re-architecture or re-platforming. Additionally, this offers a highly cost-effective solution as there are no additional charges for using Oracle Interconnect for Azure or moving data between OCI and Azure. Instead of waiting for Oracle Database @ Azure, the OCI Azure Interconnect allows you to get your Oracle workloads where they’re supposed to be today.

At Eclipsys, we have in-house resources who understand both Azure and Oracle Cloud. Our team can guide you through optimizing your licensing, minimizing your costs, and controlling things like egress charges. If you’re tired of waiting and want to get your Oracle workloads to where they belong, then we can help.
