A Bold Move Toward Autonomous Databases - Larry Ellison’s CloudWorld 2024 Keynote
3:20

Yesterday, at the 2024 Oracle CloudWorld, Larry Ellison made a significant announcement during his keynote speech. By the end of 2025, all Oracle applications will be powered by Oracle Autonomous Database. Although many of Oracle’s applications—including Millennium Health, Fusion Sales and Marketing, and most of its industry solutions—are already running on autonomous, a commitment to move all their core applications is transformational. This will include moving Fusion ERP, HCM, and NetSuite, onto this fully autonomous system.

Ellison highlighted two key motivators that are driving this decision: enhanced security and reduced operational costs.

  1. Stronger Security Through Automation

According to Ellison, the primary cause of cyberattacks today is human error. Simply put, human mistakes create vulnerabilities. Oracle’s Autonomous Database, however, eliminates this risk. It configures, encrypts, backs up, and recovers itself automatically—and it handles updates and patches seamlessly. Essentially, by removing human intervention from database management, Oracle is able to significantly increase IT security, and decrease their vulnerabilities.

This is a game-changer for businesses struggling with ever increasing cybersecurity threats. With an autonomous database, your systems are always up to date, always encrypted, and always secure—without the risk of a misstep from your IT staff. Security no longer depends on human accuracy; instead, it's automated and bulletproof.

  1. Cutting Costs and Improving Efficiency

The second motivator behind this move is cost efficiency. Human labor is expensive, especially when it comes to database management. By adopting an autonomous system, businesses can reduce the need for manual oversight, bringing down costs related to IT maintenance.

Autonomous databases automatically adjusts resources based on demand, helping avoid both over- and under-provisioning. The bottom line? Lower operational costs and better economies of scale for businesses of all sizes.

What This Means for Your Business

Ellison’s vision is clear: autonomous databases are the future of enterprise technology. Whether you're using Oracle Cloud, NetSuite, or Fusion ERP, this move promises tighter security, lower costs, and a streamlined IT infrastructure. An industry shift to automated systems will see your in house teams focus on innovation and driving the business forward instead of mundane maintenance tasks. Innovating with autonomous database could be the key to both long-term security and profitability.

With the shift to Oracle Autonomous Database expected to be complete by the end of 2025, now is the perfect time to evaluate how this technology can benefit your business. Let Larry’s commitment to autonomous inspire you to innovate yourself.
